12/31/2023 0 Comments Piranesi print sizes“Bookmaking was his primary medium, not printmaking.” “If we stop looking at these drawings as loose sheets of paper and think about them as designed to be pages of books that go with other printed images, that can open up a new way of seeing the career of one of the 18th century’s great artists,” Minor said. On these pieces of waste paper, Minor said, Piranesi sketched images of men printing on paper, with the visual effect of sitting next to the artist, looking over his shoulder in his studio. “Most of these drawings show men working in Piranesi’s print shop, and he’s sitting there with a scrap paper pile next to him, doodling, looking at the guy who is hanging up wet prints on a clothesline, or working on a copperplate while wearing the heavy apron to keep acid off him,” Minor said. What Minor and colleagues found in these works was the artist telling them about his work and his life - his art. Minor said it was essential to go and physically see the objects in order for Piranesi to print a text or image on paper, the paper had to be damp, which is why his drawings had to have been done last. ![]() Thus began a multi-continent, multi-scholar collaboration to study the backs of Piranesi drawings, many of which are located in London, Berlin and New York. There were also spelling mistakes, suggesting the drawings were made on discarded proof pages for a book, not a finished product. ![]() Starting with the idea that the drawings must be made on pages from a book, she began reconstructing these passages about tombs, which included italicized text signaling content quoted from other sources. “This was very exciting because I knew that just a few months prior, Princeton University had acquired another sheet by the artist that also had text on its back,” Minor said. One was a Piranesi drawing, and when Minor turned it over, she found a printed text. When Minor arrived at Notre Dame in 2015, Cheryl Snay, curator of European art at the Snite Museum of Art, pulled some drawings based on Minor’s research interests. Later in his career, he became a publisher himself. Many of Piranesi’s early works were copperplates sold to Roman publishers as illustrations for Grand Tour guidebooks. “He also knew how to use images to make arguments in service of advertising.” “Piranesi loved to make ancient Rome look grandiose and overpowering,” Minor said. ![]() The research, recuperative in method, serves as a biography of Piranesi’s books, bringing text and image together to reveal a learned mind alive with biting wit and unflinching big-picture questions. The researchers work from the perspective that these prints were meant to be pages in a dozen volumes about the monuments and history of Rome, and also about the limits of what can be known about the past. ![]() Minor’s “ Piranesi Unbound,” co-authored with Carolyn Yerkes, associate professor of early modern architecture at Princeton University, examines nearly 200 of Piranesi’s engravings and drawings. While early modern artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi has been principally known for his drawings and etchings of ancient Rome, new research from Heather Hyde Minor, professor of art history at the University of Notre Dame, reinterprets Piranesi’s artistic oeuvre by flipping the works over and reading what is written on the backs. (Princeton University Libraries, Rare Books and Special Collections) Piranesi's depiction of the Lex Parieti Faciundo Puteolana with an imaginative reconstruction, Della Magnificenza ed Architettura de'Romani, (Rome, 1761), plate xxxvii.

12/31/2023 0 Comments Sigma cinema![]() I think there are so many ways to rig it up. Īndrew Reid: If the memory chip could go here in the cage it would add minimal weight, minimal fuss. Sam Smith: What you could do because the strap lugs are removable on the side, you can kind of just get a free flat surface there. It needs some creativity from the cage designers. Sam Smith: The only thing you’d need to worry about is blocking buttons on the top!Īndrew Reid: Yeah, with the cages, with this being integrated, that would be hard, but it could go on the base, but then it’s blocking the door. Amazon for ten bucks do a caddy for theseĪndrew Reid: Then it would not be jutting out, it would be exactly the profile of the top panel. There’s an even smaller SSD technology, which is exactly the same size of the top and bottom panel of the Fp. ![]() Sam Smith: Yeah sure, somewhere down the line – I think it’s just a case of between us and Samsung, they allowing it really!Īndrew Reid: Sure. It’s their proprietary chip! What I’m interested in the here and now is a cage which I can just slot that into. So the SSD, we’ve authorised it with the Samsung T5, 256GB is not fast enough but the higher capacity versions are.Īndrew Reid: I’d like to see this memory chip (T5) built in to a different model, at a higher price, because it wouldn’t add much to the size of the weight. Sam Smith: Just these two cards (are recommended at the moment for Cinema DNG). You have to get the high speed SD cards, so we’ll be looking at Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-II 64GB-128GB, or the Panasonic SCZA cards.Īndrew Reid: So would you have a full list of compatible cards? Sam Smith: Yes, so in terms of the basic spec of it, we can do Cinema DNG internally and that comes out in 8bit, or we can do full HD which comes out at 12bit, which is really nice to have on an SD card. The special thing about the stills camera (form factor) for me is the stealthy ability to grab shots for documentary and street shooting… I sat down for 30 minutes with Sam Smith of Sigma UK for an interview at IBC 2019 (Edited for clarity and flow).Īndrew Reid: What I’m primarily interested in, and what I think really is unique is the Cinema DNG 4K RAW of this camera. The key to this camera though I think will be to find as ergonomic as possible way to attach an SSD for the full-fat 12bit 4K Cinema DNG. 8bit and RAW seem like oxymorons but how many other full frame cameras shoot Cinema DNG 4K RAW to SD cards? The answer is none. In the brochure at IBC the Fp was listed as shooting 4K 10bit RAW internal to UHS-II SDXC card but this has since dropped to 8bit to get the data-rate under what the card can sustain. ![]() It’s a good start though, with a comprehensive and well prioritised feature-set. I had my venerable Samsung NX1 with me, and he remarked that the product manager for the NX1 went to work for Sigma’s camera team on the Fp! So they are in good hands as this camera was genuinely ground-breaking and ergonomic.Īs this is Sigma’s first camera to shoot 4K, and the first ever Fp camera in the range, much can be added as the camera matures through subsequent generations and firmware updates. Interestingly I also bumped into Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki at the show and had some small-talk. ![]() Internal 4K RAW uncompressed (bit-depth drops to 8bit at the moment).Internal 1080p 12bit internal RAW Cinema DNG uncompressed.Cinema DNG RAW 4K 12bit to USB C SSD media. Most exciting for me is the focus on the video recording features – which are big step for Sigma and indeed push the boundaries of what we expect from a “prosumer” camera. This is clever and will get the camera a lot of use by top-flight talent. A small and incredibly light camera that hits the big full frame notes, some of the niche features like the digital director’s viewfinder are unheard of in consumer full frame cameras from major manufacturers. From the ground-up the Sigma Fp seems to be aimed at us, at artists. There were two highlights of IBC 2019 for me. 12/31/2023 0 Comments Convertilla change output folderExpected Full Path: C:\Program Files\Windows Software Developer\Convertilla\convertilla.exe. ![]()
12/31/2023 0 Comments Trauma responses fight flight ze fawn![]() Trauma that is preverbal (ie, related to attachment trauma and early life events) is also not necessarily helped that well by talking therapies. ![]() While talking therapies are obviously of great benefit to people who are dealing with trauma and PTSD, these tend to largely ignore the nervous system and the realities that go with an overly activated nervous system or one frozen in fear. This mind–body re-education is what the Alexander technique can help with. Psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk says that with trauma, “The mind needs to be reeducated to feel physical sensations, and the body needs to be helped to tolerate and enjoy the comforts of touch”. This alienation from our bodies can also be expressed in different forms of body hatred and just not being as kind and loving towards our bodies as they truly deserve. Sadly, in doing so, we may deaden our capacity to feel fully alive. Those of us who have been through traumatic experiences can also disassociate ourselves from our bodies and the way our emotions are felt in our bodies in an effort to shut off terrifying sensations. People can also be left with heightened startle responses and intensely physically uncomfortable extreme emotions and emotional triggers, flashbacks, and repetition compulsions around the repetition of past events. The experience of trauma can also keep people stuck in the past in many ways as they continue to experience chronic biological hyperarousal of the sympathetic nervous system, bodily tension, and hypervigilance. ![]() Biological fight–flight and freeze and fawn responses are more exaggerated in those who have been through traumatic experiences. Psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk notes the experience of trauma changes the nervous system and that trauma is held and stored in the body and in tension in bodily tissues and that this tension held in people’s bodies makes them uncoordinated. Post-traumatic stress symptoms have their origin in the entire body’s response to the original trauma. Working with the Alexander technique has much to offer those of us who have been through traumatic experiences of various kinds and who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), hypervigilance (being extremely alert for potential danger), and/or an overly activated nervous system, with high levels of resulting stress and anxiety. 12/31/2023 0 Comments Slack jawed gawkers mr burns![]() Hetero-lifemates, to quote Kevin Smith, if you will. Lenny & Carl suffer from the "Bert & Ernie" syndrome that plagues a number of heterosexual male friendships on sitcoms. XDĪnd Charlie! The guy with the glasses, and his story of miraculous escape right? I do miss that guy too, he was funny for some reason although he got next to no lines. Its just a big screw you joke to the audience. Its just ambiguous enough for you to come to your own conclusion about it, but I still lean towards that first one. ![]() Of course you could interpret it as a sort of satire of some kind.maybe that the person you least suspect harbors hidden feelings or something. Its hard to explain.but they're just really, really close friends because they're basically different sides of one character. Its sort of a subtle poke at the fact each of them are their own world. Lenny shows more individual traits and is generally a little more capable of existing on his own, but in general I bet you anything they're basically counted as one character. Reason for that is if you look at it from the writers' point of view.these characters are basically two characters in one. Personally, I think the thing with them being gay is more of a meta joke than an actual, serious fact thrown in. Though I do think it's interesting that in the earlier seasons, they were there to give Moe's a depressing feel, while nowadays they aren't around much any longer (probably to coincide with the slightly less dank feel of Moe's today). Examples include numerous glossies and framed pictures of Lenny, "There's been a lot of talk about Lenny," "I'm going to punch Lenny in the back of the head," "Not Lenny!," and more.Īs for the barflies, they're really more props than anything. Lenny, on the other hand, has been used (with great success, I might add) as a source of random humor. Carl has very few scenes where he isn't with Lenny, and his best moments are always shared with his bud. Looking at them seperately, Carl is actually strangely dependent on Lenny-at least in terms of the show. I do like how neither of them is terribly exaggerated. They do make for very good ancillary characters, giving Homer a couple of relatively "normal" characters to interact with while at work and at Moe's. Lenny seems to have a friendly admiration for Carl, most noticeable in Half-Decent Proposal. I have a feeling this topic will become more of an appreaciation topic than a really deep discussion, but nonetheless they still deserve it I think. They're not overly zany or wacky even today, nor are they boring background characters.they're just there. To me they've always brought a kind of chill, humility to crowd scenes and conversations. I just love Lenny and Carl, the way they fight and quirrel.but ultimatly stick together so close reminds me a lot of a pair of friends I used to know. They are very light characters on discussion, but there are still some things.such as their very friendship and the implications that have been brought up more and more by fans and the series itself. Yes, this week's spotlight may be a bit more challenging than the others before it. They have a surprising amount of quotes in the series despite being such underdogs in the show, and come on.Homer wouldn't quite be what he is today without his barfly buddies.Īlthough, are they just friends.or is there something else perhaps? Lenny, the quirky but calm and relaxed everyman, and Carl.the quiet observer with an occasional two cents to put in. Lenny and Carl may not be as heavy a presense in the show as much as some of the other characters, but they're undeniably an essential part of it and Springfield nonetheless. Two of Homer's best friends since childhood, they have remained good friends all the way to the middle of their lives. 12/31/2023 0 Comments Simon parkes interview doug billings![]() (C) THE FEW CHOSEN: Those saints who were alive in group #2 who are now physically dead. 12/30/2023 0 Comments Baldurs gate 3 review 2021![]() There was no in-universe reason why Mortimer would drag an explosive barrel into the middle of a group of not yet hostile NPCs. The winning strategy in such cases was to reload a save and try to cheat as much as possible. One thing I swiftly learned was that whenever negotiation broke down and a conversation turned into combat, I would usually get a lot of little goblin-sized bootprints all over my buttocks because deceiving and weaselling out of combat only worked often enough to make me completely bloody unprepared for the unavoidable fights. Something I was able to exploit to my favour during one combat sequence where I kept moving to the other side of a huge pit and causing two minotaurs to keep getting confused and changing direction like we were chasing a nervous bride around a honeymoon suite coffee table. ![]() The world is extremely flexible with letting you make crazy jumps to bypass obstacles, but the pathfinding frequently has trouble keeping up. If you don’t go through them all individually telling them to go into stealth mode they’ll blunder in after your sneaky ass like three embarrassing parents coming to pick you up from the school disco. And as the ground level gameplay kicked in, it soon became clear that the game wasn’t going to let me hide at the back of the party plucking my fantasy banjo and slinging the odd Vicious Mockery like the most infuriating little tit at the hoedown contest, you’ve got to micromanage all your party member’s actions and levelling choices. Turns out everyone’s got squirmy worms in their brains that will turn them into the purple squiddly dudes within days if we don’t find a way to hack them out, and so we’re set loose to adventure our way through that problem by dealing with five hundred different ones. We also swiftly load up the party bus with a bunch of fellow escapees and adventurers, all with diverse classes and complex backstories but more importantly representing a nice convenient meat shield for Mortimer to hide behind. Forests, embattled villages, dungeons, can’t move ten steps without hitting a trap or a gelatinous cube. And I’m all like “Sorry, did we come in the wrong door? I’m here for Baldur’s Gate, why are in the last mission of an XCOM game?” But then we get away from the crash site and we’re in more traditional D&D land. So, the game starts and we’re on an alien spaceship that crash lands for various complicated reasons and we have to fight our way out of the wreckage, fending off purple squiddly dudes in robes. ![]() On that note, I also thought it best to try out the game’s flexibility by role playing as my existing D&D character, Mortimer, a weaselly con artist who min-maxes deception in order to weasel his way out of problems because’s he’s as much use in a fight as an actual weasel. ![]() View Full TranscriptĪnd I could go in already knowing things that both Baldur’s Gate 3 and D&D generally are really sodding bad at explaining, like how the cocking Sneak Attack works. Ooh, you mean you can break doors AND stack crates? And the second factor was that since the last D&D-based video game I have become a D&D player IRL, tune into Adventure is Nigh every other Saturday only on the Escapist plug plug, so when I started the game and the screen became deluged with icons like it was being subjected to the wrath of Windows 95, I understood what some of them meant. So I hear the new Baldurs Gate is making bank like a knicker elastic shop next door to a French burlesque club – I don’t know, it made sense in my head – and a lot of people are going “Oh! Finally gamers send a clear message that they want good single player games with strong design and narrative, not just fancy graphics and live service twattery.” To which I reply, “You mean besides the previous twelve times they sent that message?” I mean, Christ, at this point it feels like saying “Prisoners in basements send clear message that they’d rather not be sodomized with a six inch wooden dowel.” But is Baldurs Gate 3 actually good or just riding the wave of the metaphorical demand for dowel removal and soothing bum cream? I’d never been one for this sort of top down clicky RPG before, but a couple of significant factors drew me to this one: editor Nick strongly suggested I give it a look, saying it’s doing some full on immersive sim stuff that sets it apart. 12/30/2023 0 Comments Compact suv honda suvs![]() The 2024 Honda HR-V is still feeling fresh from its 2023 model year redesign. ![]() On the downside, the Corolla Cross has too many hard plastic cabin materials, its handling is duller than the HR-V's, and - like the Honda - it has a weak and unrefined engine.Ĭompare the HR-V, Crosstrek and Corolla Cross » HR-V Interior: A Pleasant Place 2024 HR-V Interior Quality Positives it shares with the HR-V include roomy seating space, modern and straightforward tech features and a comfortable ride.
